An Extraordinary French 19th Century Finely Chased Gilt-Bronze Mounted Marquetry and Parquetry Commode with Sarancolin Marble top, by Guillaume Grohé, Paris, Circa: 1870

INFORMATION ABOUT THE CABINET-MAKER:

Guillaume Grohé was of German origin and established his first workshop with his brother Jean-Michel in Paris in 1827. In 1829 they opened an enterprize at 107, rue de Grennelle, which specialized in making and selling furniture and objets d'art of extraordinary quality.

The business grew quickly bringing them terrific success and financial rewards. Their work became amongst the best the best and most sought after in Paris in the 19th century. The firm exhibited regularly at a series of International exhibitions, which started in 1851. Perhaps their most celebrated commission was to refurnish the Imperial apartments in the Louvre, for Napoleon III and Princess Eugenie.

Queen Victoria and Louis-Philippe also purchased many pieces of furniture from the firm that are currently at Buckingham Palace. A Contemporary commentary bears witness to the popularity the firm enjoyed, "la prépondérance du goût français dans l'ameublement de luxe et les modèles que son beau talent a crées assurent pour longtemps à notre pays cette glorieuse suprematie artistique". Translation: "the preponderance of the French taste in the furnishing of luxury and the models that its beautiful talent create will ensure for a long time our country's glorious artistic supremacy"

This piece is typical of the way Grohé used and eighteenth century vocabulary of form and in particular his predilection for the work of Jean-Henri Riesener, 1734--1806.

An identical piece is illustrated at Denise Ledoux Lebard, Le Mobilier Français du XIXe Siècle, p245. A similar pair of cabinets by Grohé were sold at Sotheby's London, lot 213, 4th October 1996.

A Very Fine French Louis XV Style 19th/20th Century Mahogany and Kingwood/Tulipwood Parquetry Ormolu Mounted "ERARD" Grand
Piano Designed by François Linke. The straight strung iron frame movement numbered 80011, the case decorated with geometric panels within foliate and C-scroll encadrements, raised on six cabriole legs headed by shell and C-scroll chutes trailing to scroll sabots.

Linke, François (1855-1946): Considered the finest French cabinet maker of the late 19th and early 20th century. By 1875, Linke who was born in Pankraz Bohemia, had arrived in Paris and established an independent workshop. His early works were mainly copies of important eighteenth century models. Linke received major attention at the Paris Exposition Universelle when he presented his totally new style, of Rococo with the addition of the new 'art nouveau' fluidity. He was awarded the gold medal for his extraordinary Grand Bureau. Linke also exhibited at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, Liege in Belgium, and the Franco-British exhibition in London in 1908. His work has long been admired for its exceptional quality and innovative interpretation of the Louis XV and Art Nouveau styles. Stamp: Engraved signature: "F.Linke", "FL" , "LINKE".

Istanbul 8 Dolmabahce Palace

After residing in Topkapi Palace for four hundred years, the royal Sultanate built the new palace of Dolmabahce in 1842-1856 after deciding that Topkapi was wearing out and no longer met the standards fit for European royalty. It has separate sections for men, women and ceremonial functions. Builders used over 10 tons of gold and 15 tons of silver to decorate the palace, which has an elaborate style that blends Asian and Western influences along with a mix of French Empire, baroque, rococo and classical themes. Some of the extravagant highlights include giant crystal chandeliers, silk carpets and drapes, original furnishings, vast murals, 600 paintings, hundreds of sculpture and objects d'art, decorated ceilings and spectacular architecture throughout. Furnishings for the palace were designed by Sechan, the same decorator who created the opulent interior of the Paris Opera. One is reminded of Versailles on steroids, with an exotic Oriental atmosphere wildly mixed in.

Admission price includes the services of an informative palace guide who walks you through many of the 285 rooms and 46 salons, connected by elegant halls and chambers. The main entrance has a grand staircase lined with Baccarat crystal banisters, impressive Corinthian columns all around, golden carved decorations and a glass ceiling from which hangs the world's third biggest chandelier, weighing one ton. All the elements in this dazzling entry coexist in perfect symmetry and harmony.

Passing through room after room is an exhilarating experience as you try to absorb the infinite details. Other decorative features include clocks, ceramics, detailed parquet floors, mirrors, balustrades, mantles, candelabras and gilded fixtures. Just when you thought the decor couldn't get more outrageous, you reach the climax in the Grand Hall, with its golden dome towering 100 feet over a vast room decorated in a brilliant display of gold, crystal and marble, with tall columns and vaulted arches all around. The tour then continues into the ladies side of the palace, which is similarly beautiful, encrusted with gold everywhere.

The palace stretches for 600 yards along the shore of the Bosphorus and is surrounded by vast gardens filled with flowers, trees and shrubs that were gathered from all over the world. You can stroll through the lush garden terraces, adorned with fountains and statues, while enjoying views across the water.
